On the anniversary of a beautiful trip to the South Island of New Zealand, I am left thinking how much things can change in a year. One year ago this week, I was skiing down some of the world’s best slopes, and today I can’t go further than 5km from my home! While we are in this lockdown, I have loved looking at past travel photos and dreaming of when I can next jet off.
Last year we spent a week in the beautiful town of Queenstown. The town and surrounding area has so much to offer including skiing, spas, wineries, and road trips. Everywhere you look is picture perfect – Queenstown is one of the most picturesque places I have ever travelled to.
One of the main reasons we ventured to Queenstown was for the skiing. We spent most of our week at the Remarkables, which was perfect for our travel group which was comprised of both beginner and experienced skiers. I was a beginner, and cannot recommend getting a lesson enough. I had a one hour lesson, learnt all the basics, and was ready to go. After no time at all, I was jumping on the ski lift and doing proper runs. One highlight of our skiing was a night spent at Coronet Peak for their night skiing.
New Zealand is notorious for its adrenaline experiences so of course we had to do something adventurous. We opted for the Nevis Swing, which is the largest giant swing in the world. It was an absolutely incredible (and also terrifying) experience being flung off the ledge and swinging over the valley. I would highly recommend this if you’re looking for something a bit less intense than bungy jumping but also want to do something that gets your blood pumping.
When we weren’t skiing or jumping off ledges, we explored the town. The town itself is a quaint ski village with fresh seafood and beautiful wine. We weren’t able to venture out to the wineries this time around so went to The Winery – Queenstown which was a really fun experience. Each wine is on tap and you are able to taste as many as you like. The waterfront pubs were my favourite spot in Queenstown – the view was amazing.
